CALONARANG
            Long time ago, in Girah Village, there lived old woman. Her name was Calonarang. She had magical power. Calonarang had a daughter. Her name was Ratna Manggali. She was very beautiful. Yet, nobody, wanted to marry her because they were afraid of her mother. People began to talk about Ratna Manggali. Calonarang didn’t like people talking about her daughter. She loved Ratna Manggali very much. When she was heard people talking about her daughter, she got angry. She cursed the village. People got ill and died.
          The King sent his best soldier to arrest Calonarang, but they failed. then, The King called Empu Baradah. The King asked for hi help. Empu Baradah sent his student, Empu Bahula to Girah Village. Empu Baradah told Empu Bahula to propose Ratna Manggali. Calonarang was very happy when Empu Bahula propose Ratna Manggali. She knew that people would not talk about her daughter anymore. She gave her daughter a big wedding party. One day, Empu Bahula asked Ratna Manggali to steal her mother’s magic book. When Calonarang was asleep, Ratna Manggali stole her mother’s magic book and gave it to her husband. Then Empu Bahula gave the book To Empu Baradah.

          After he knew Calonarang’s magic secret, Empu Baradah came to Girah Village. Calonarang and Empu Baradah had a fight. Calonarang lost the fight because she did not have her magical book anymore. That was the end of Calonarang.

KANCIL AND TIGER
            One day Tiger saw Kancil playing with a stick in the forest. Tiger wanted to know what kancil was doing.
 “What are you doing, Kancil ?” asked Tiger.
            “Shh, don’t disturb me, Tiger,” answered Kancil, “I’m thinking of a present from Nabi Sulaiman.”
            “A present ?” asked Tiger.
            “Yes, a present,” said Kancil.
            “What a present is it ?” asked Tiger.
            “I don’t know, but it must very beautiful or expensive. Nabi Sulaiman is very rich, isn’t he ?” answered Kancil. “Well, because I help him guard his holy drum.”     
            “What drum? Where is it ?” asked Tiger.
            “A holy drum. It is up there in tree,” said Kancil.
            “I think it is not a drum. It is a beehive.” Said Tiger.
            “A beehive ? How dare you compare hi holy drum with a beehive,” cried Kancil, be careful with your words Tiger.”
            “Ok Kancil, I’m very sorry. May I play the drum, then ?”
            “Oh no Tiger. Nabi Sulaiman would be very angry at me.”
            “Please Kancil, just for one or two minutes.” Begged Tiger.
            “All right. I give you three minutes to play the drum,” answered Kancil, “but let me go a bit further away from here because I’m afraid Nabi Sulaiman will angry at me.
            “Ok, go quickly, Kancil,” Said Tiger.
            When Kancil was far from the drum, Tiger beat the drum with Kancil stick. Suddenly thousand of  bees flew out of their home and stung Tiger. Tiger cried loudly for help but Kancil was not there.
            Finally Tiger ran to the river, jumped into it so that the bees left him.

THE LEGEND OF LAKE TOBA
                Once upon a time, there was a fisherman whose name is batara guru sahala who lived in batak land. One day he caught a fish. He was surprised to find that the fish could talk like human being. It begged sahala to let her free. He did accordingly.
          As soon as the fish was free, it changed into a woman. She was so beautiful that sahala fell in love her at once. She asked her to marry him. The woman agreed to marry sahala. However, she told him that he must never let out the secret that she once a fish. Sahala promised her that he could not tell anyone about it.
          They married happily, and had two daughters. Every morning sahala went out fishing. His daughters would bring him his lunch. One day, however instead of bringing the food to their father, the two girls ate it.
          When sahala knew that they had done with meal, he got very angry. He shouted at them saying, “you behaved exactly like the daughters of fish!”
          The daughters did not know that what their father meant. They went home and asked their mother about it. Their mother was very annoyed. Though sahala apologized to her later. She would not forgive him for breaking his promise.
          Then the earth began to shake, and volcanoes started to erupt. The earth cracked and formed a big hole. People said that the hole became lake toba.
